Joseph H. DeLisle (73) died peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 31 at 7:50am after a courageous two year battle with Pancreatic cancer. He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on December 27, 1945 to Joseph & Wilma DeLisle. His younger brother and best friend, Jim DeLisle, preceded him in death and was missed dearly. He graduated from Speedway High School in 1964 and was proud to be part of the first class to graduate from the new high school building on 25th street. Joe graduated from Purdue in 1969 with a bachelor's degree in Mathematics and from Ball State in 1977 with a bachelor's degree Architecture.

Joe met his wife, Jeanne, in 1969 in Indianapolis and they got married a year later on December 27, 1970.They had three children, Jason (43, cutest baby), Jennifer (41, favorite daughter) and Justin (38, “Orangie” and lone family Eagle Scout) and reside in Speedway. Joe began his career by teaching elementary math in Greenwood and eventually retired from BSA Life Structures after a lengthy career in architecture. He was a man of many talents (youth yo-yo champion, local poker champion, softball champion, thumb war champion) and was very active in the Speedway community (reserve police officer, booster club, youth soccer coach and boy scout leader). Later in life and despite his battle with cancer, Joe loved traveling with his beloved Jean Bean on a number of trips around North America (Alaska, South Carolina, New Orleans, Hawaii twice, Nova Scotia, & San Antonio). Joe enjoyed making his world famous spaghetti (“respect the sauce”), jewelry crafting, drinking Kool-Aid, photography & reading science fiction. He was deeply saddened by the loss of his 57 Chevy (darn it Jim) and 2008 red Chevy (darn it Jean).

He was the lone Boilermaker in a house full of Hoosiers, had a laugh that would fill the room and was known online as JoeSilverFox to his poker friends. Over the years, Joe has been the father of three beagles (Queenie, Jack & Jeff), several hundred guppies, a turtle, a newt, a gerbil, and two hamsters (Bob & Suzie).

He was kind, quiet, sweet, surprisingly funny, brave and fought until the very end. We will miss him terribly. Joe is survived by Jeanne, his wife of 48 years, son Jason (Amy) DeLisle, daughter Jennifer (Jason) Bonhard, son Justin (Lindsey) DeLisle, seven grandchildren who affectionately call him PopPop (Alex, Macy, Tommy DeLisle; Lucia & Zack Bonhard; Timmy & Peyton DeLisle), sister-in-law Barb DeLisle and many close family and friends.

Visitation will be Friday, August 2nd from 5-8pm and Saturday, August 3rd from 10:30-11:30am at Conkle Funeral home in Speedway. Funeral services will be Saturday, August 3rd at 11:30am at Conkle. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Joe's memory to Scholarships for Speedway (5335 W 25th St, Speedway, In 46224), Speedway Public Library (5633 W 25th St, Speedway, In 46224) or plant a tree of your choice.

Special thanks to IU Health Hospice, especially RN Patricia & aide Jonetta, as well as oncologist Dr Sehdev, Dr Amy Johnson and PA Joel Westberry.
